02 We ask...Sean Ludwig

PureGritSurvey_Sean.jpg

When I first came up with the idea of Pure Grit BBQ, Sean was the first person I contacted. He has a passion for BBQ and NYC BBQ in particular. Although his brand of BBQ is of the brisket and rib variety, his appetite for the NYC-area restaurant scene and a true love of trying new things made us hit it off instantly. Jenny and I learned so much from him and we will be forever grateful for his warm welcome into the tri-state BBQ community. Follow @nycbbq and sign up for the Smokesheet, his newsletter, you won’t regret it.

Tell us about your life in NYC. What do you love about where you live? What are you up to these days?

I love Brooklyn because it's singular. There's no place like it and I firmly believe it will come back strong. I'm a freelance business, technology, and food writer.

What’s your favorite condiment? Why?

BBQ sauce. I love that there are so many kinds and it surprisingly pairs well with more things than you'd think.

What's your favorite BBQ side?

Mac N Cheese.

What's the most overrated condiment/the most underrated, why?

Ketchup is probably the most overrated condiment but it's still good and useful for potatoes. BBQ sauce is the most underrated condiment because people don't know everything you can do with it.

Who is your fave insta cook follow and why?

@grillgirlrobyn - She's a creative griller who makes delicious recipes and never backs down from a challenge.

Describe your fridge door: Perfectly organized or a chaotic mess? Is there anything in there that you don't remember buying and never use?

It's a mess. Lots of condiments, most of which go unused for weeks. If there's anything in there I don't remember buying, I blame my significant other. :)

Fave takeout spot? What city?

My favorite takeout spot as of late is Circa Brewing in Downtown Brooklyn. Great selection of sandwiches, pizzas, beers, and cocktails, all of them delicious.

What's your favorite life hack? Any new ones?

I'm sure I've got a life hack or two but struggling to think of one.

Describe your first post-covid night out!

I hope my first post-Covid night out is going to involve eating out a BBQ restaurant with lots of friends, seeing a movie at a real movie theater, and then finishing off the night with a fine cocktail or two at a bar.

What does pure grit mean to you?

Pure Grit means betting against the odds to make something special. It means you don't back down when the times get tough and you fight for what you believe in, consequences be damned.
